Snorkeling or Skin Diving is a great hobby. It allows you to see clearly what's underwater and enjoy its beauty even if you are not a good swimmer, but you must have somebody (a good swimmer) with you. The only problem why some people don't like it is because they don't know how to choose the right snorkeling equipment. Mask, snorkel, fins, and personal flotation device are the basic set of snorkeling equipment you need to consider and need to choose the right equipment that would suit to your budget and preferable design.
Mask.
You can dive without snorkel, but you can't snorkel without a snorkel. Although there are a lot of designs and styles of snorkel, the choice is still up to you. When buying the right snorkel, you have to think if its comfortable and fits to you needs. Choose a snorkel where you can easily breathe to fill your lungs with ample air and exhale without exerting too much effort. You don't want to to use a snorkel with a very slim tube which makes you breathe hard, nor with very big tube where the only air you can inhale is the one you just exhaled.
Fins.

Mask.
Obviously, it is where you can see the beauty of the corals and sea life beneath you. It is hard to enjoy your dive if your mask is leaking or fogging.
There's a lot of type of masks available in the market, but the question is, "what things do you need to consider in choosing the right one for you?". Well, first on the list is the design and quality. Consider the clarity of vision you'll have when wearing the mask. Then, mind its water proofing. Look for a mask where there is a silicon skirt which will prevent the water from getting in and hurt your eyes (of course, you don't want to be like a rotten fish having red eyes). Next, you need to consider the nose pocket. It shouldn't be too loose or to tight, it must be comfortable. Lastly, buy a mask which has a good strap that can hold it steady.
Snorkel.

Fins.
This Equipment is optional but will give you better experience especially when you want to go deeper to see the corals closer than staying in the surface. The right fins are the one where you can handle easily. Don't use fins that make you hard to kick; it will just induce muscle cramps and will ruin your diving experience.
Personal Flotation Device.
Flotation aid is optional to those good swimmers, but a must to non-swimmers. Using a flotation aid makes you stay in the water longer and makes your snorkeling safer. Choose the right size for you; not too large, not too small. Select the right type of PFDs for snorkeling (Type 3 and Type 5 are recommended for this activity).
In conclusion, you must select the right snorkel equipment according to your preferences and actual fit. To know more tips on choosing the right snorkel equipment, ask an experienced diver (he can even tell you what brand is the best for certain location), or go to an outdoor shop (they can recommend which equipment will suit for you).
